0Diablo II is seen as a true PC classic by lots of people, but I honestly can't say that the game has ever meant that much to me personally. This major action RPG definitely did not make a good first impression on me back in 2000, and since I've never seriously returned to it since my first playthrough (nor checked out the multiplayer much, for that matter) the initial disappointment never quite went away. The sequel to Blizzard's refreshingly streamlined 1996 take on traditional roguelike mechanics looked rather bad even 12 years ago, and at first glance didn't seem to offer much in the way of substantial improvements over the original entry in the series.
Now, it's obviously true that just about anything past the game's underwhelming and dull Act 1 (no doubt created early on in the protracted development cycle) demonstrated incremental progress in terms of both scale and variety compared to the hermetically sealed town/dungeon structure of the first game. However, Diablo II still ended up being something I blazed through from start to finish once (or 1,5 times, since I experienced a show-stopping, save file-corrupting bug with my first character) and then didn't think too much about until the rumors of a third entry in the series got going a few years ago.
