Satellites orbiting the earth help us address several fundamental challenges. Communication satellites provide Internet connectivity in remote regions. GPS satellites drive location services. Earth observation satellites capture imagery in various bands enabling remote sensing for industries, such as agriculture and environmental monitoring. Despite these applications, satellite systems are only scratching the surface of what can be enabled. The latest advances in Cloud, Edge, AI, and IoT can help these satellite constellations drive several new applications. For example, we can provide much faster Internet, with higher throughput, and lesser latencies. We can provide earth observations in near real-time using Edge compute, and uncover details in satellite imagery that were previously not possible using advances in AI. Through the Space Connections initiative we are doing fundamental research on the satellite pipeline, on communications, Edge, AI, and Cloud technologies, to enable scenarios, such as pervasive affordable Internet access, and near real-time insights on earth observation imagery.
