Thus begins the meat of the laboratory section for RE 2, with Claire and Leon running all over the damn place for their various quests. Leon is sent to pick up Sherry after losing Ada, and Claire frantically searches for an antigen to stop the G-Virus from killing the girl. Or something to that effect. They never really explain what happens when the larva in Sherry pupate, nor what their relation is to the G-virus itself. We know that when a host rejects the embryos, they explode and a G-Creature pops out, and we know from later games that Sherry was in deed infected with the G-Virus. Perhaps Birkin was trying to make perfected G-Creatures using Sherry's infected body as the host, kind of like Parasite Eve's Ultimate Life Form? It isn't ever really explained and, overall, it's pretty fucking gross anyway. This video covers the bulk of the lab exploration and puzzle solving.
