Many players have praised RE7 for being an admirably focused AAA title, but personally I found myself constrained by the rigid traditionalism of the whole experience. There are plenty of narrative and structural callbacks to earlier Resident Evils, but the action-packed craziness of RE6 is replaced by a dour horror pastiche which left a bad taste in my mouth. The latter half of the game in particular reminded me more of the well-intentioned but workmanlike Revelations spin-off than any of the mainline entries in the series. The environments are visually impressive, but ultimately amount to little more than straight corridors and rectangular rooms separated by locked doors. In other words, there's a curious flatness to the design and this probably has something to do with what's required by Playstation VR to ensure good performance on a PS4 and avoid players throwing up. Also, while I had nothing against the tank controls of RE1 when I played the Gamecube remake many years ago, the sluggish first-person movement of RE7 makes exploration tedious and avoiding enemy attacks feels more laborious and imprecise than it should be. I still liked the game overall, but if it'd gone on for any longer than 10 hours I might have become very impatient...
