The highly anticipated next installment in Bioware's genre-redefining action RPG Mass Effect series is...bad? That might be too early to tell, but the pseudo-demo available through Origin Access is comprised of an artless and unimaginative prologue section which lacks both Mass Effect 1's enigmatic 1970s science fiction vibe, Mass Effect 2's chilly neo-Western swagger as well as Mass Effect 3's expensive-looking action blockbuster presentation. In comparison, Andromeda comes off as stilted and generic - more SyFy than sci-fi, so to speak - as it delivers a workmanlike introduction to its setting and central conflict via forgettable dialogue, awkward character models and clunky combat controls. Most depressing of all (though not surprising in and of itself) is ME:A's strong resemblance to Dragon Age: Inquisition, a bloated mess of an RPG if there ever was one...
