Resident Evil Revelations is one of the best spinoffs in the franchise, and its quality sits well within the mainline titles for what it set out to do.

Released in 2012 for the 3DS, Resident Evil Revelations serves as a bit of a middle ground of the focus on survival horror with the more action approach after 4. It makes a few tweaks to the formula (like the addition of scanning). Some work better than others.

The best comparison I feel would be the Lost In Nightmares DLC from RE5. It's a fun little romp, about 6 hours for the campaign for me. Raid mode takes a different approach than mercs but has its own values as well.

Its story is structured like a TV drama keeps switching through characters and keeps you guessing...for better or for worse.

It is simplified as it was 3Ds game first, so it mostly strips things down to the core of what RE is, but the core it has is excellent. It does make a few tweaks to the formula as well, some working better than others.
