Retro and Reminisce // Crisis Zone [That oddball PS2 Port]
Namco's PS2 Iteration of Crisis Zone is baffling, especially considering the stellar Port of Time Crisis II: Crisis Zone feels off, and it's not just because of the lack of the Arcade's Blue SMG with it's accurate (read: HARD) Haptic Feedback.
Everything on the PS2 feels a scant bit slower. Missiles, Bombs and Blades (I.E. any type of Projectile) feels a bit too sped up. Some Boss Designs were swapped out for something that isn't as visually appealing as it's Arcade Counterpart, most notably being the Business Park's Pair of Boss' needless redesign. The Helicopter is now a... soupy Brown and Green Camoflage instead of a sleek Black. Even the Tank looks softer and reacts slower, all while lacking the visual oomph when it fires it's Turret at you.
It honestly feels as if Namco wanted to produce a Home Console Port that happened to include Crisis Zone's Arcade Iteration. Or that the Producer just didn't care. I vote for the former.
Gameplay wise?? Crisis Zone is still incredible all of these years later. Level Design. Gameplay Flow. And pure, addicting Fun Factor. Keep in mind that the Arcade Version was released in 1999 and the PS2 Version was released in 2004. Yep, 1999 was an excellent year for one of the BEST Arcade Producers of the Arcade Era.
