Retro Fighters N64 controller vs Original N64 controller. Which pad is the best? I got together with a few mates and we tried them both out.

Based on my review of the Retro Fighters N64 Brawler controller, there was a bit of concern in the comments. We tested the controller on OG hardware but many people were concerned with the Brawler controller's analogue deadzones vs the original OG N64 controller.

We tested the Retro Fighters N64 control pad and the original N64 control pad side by side in the following games:

Mario Kart 64
F-Zero X
Mickey's Speedway
Diddy Kong Racing
GoldenEye 007
Perfect Dark
Turok: Rage Wars
Wave Race 64
Mission Impossible (lol)

And we found no appreciable deadzone on the analogue sticks. I'm not saying they're not there. What I'm saying is that four normal blokes having a good time on the N64 didn't pick up on any appreciable lack of sensitivity on the Retro Fighters N64 controllers. My theory here is that over time the original N64 controllers suffer from a bit of analogue drift due to the analogue stick wearing down. These can be replaced of course, but the vast majority of N64 controllers now suffer from (at least) a slightly wobbly analogue stick. It's hard to gauge deadzones when your control is 20-years old and a bit worn out.

Truth be told, for normal N64 gaming the Retro Fighters pad is a triumph. As a group we all enjoyed using the Brawler N64 pad more than the original N64 controller, despite the fierce nostalgia for the original N64 pad. If you're the kind of person who insists on original hardware then this isn't for you and I'm surprised you're watching. Likewise, if you're a twitch gamer and you require the highest tolerances in your gaming hardware, I highly doubt this product is for you but I would also argue that you're not getting your mileage from the official N64 controller either.

The Retro Fighters N64 pad is better than the original in my opinion, and my little Friday night kebab party pals all felt really fulsome towards the Retro Fighters controller. Can't recommend this N64 pad enough. It really is the best N64 controller there is.
