Retro Reviews - Ducktales
Made by Capcom in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Ducktales gets rereleased on the Big 3 through the Disney Afternoon Collection. Like many licensed games during the 8-bit Era, Ducktales gets a 2D platforming treatment, but the first thing you notice is that you're able to choose your levels from the start. There's 5 total. And each of the levels has treasures to collect, multiple routes to take, and hidden areas to be discovered. Ice cream and cake refills your health, while 3,000,000 dollars can be used to refill health by pressing select. Complete all the levels including some memorable boss fights, and it's back to Transylvania for the final showdown. Scrooge McDuck has the unique ability to use his cane like a pogo stick, which is used to attack enemies, protect from spikes, cover distances, and reach higher area. It's so much fun to play with, and is what really made this game stand out and inspire games like Shovel Knight. You can also swing the cane like a golf club to knock boxes and boulders, and are commonly set up for trick shots. If you try to hit Huey Dewey or Louie, a talkbox appears, which is a shame because I really want to kill them and steal their allowance. BTW, why are there two Louies on the select screen. I guess they're doing laundry. Another notable feature of this game is the level design. Exploring them for the first time is compelling, with branching routes and secrets to encounter, but once you learn the fastest way to the boss, you can beat the game in under 10 minutes, like you can skip most of the African mine. Speaking of which why do I need to go back to Transylvania to get the key, was this just a way to drag out the game. And replaying the castle again for a trip to the final boss is a bit of a middle finger. The music is really good-- mega man level quality, with the moon theme being a stand out. There's three difficulty levels to choose from, and the game is challenging but by no means hardcore difficult. If you're having trouble try tracking down the 2 health upgrades. And there's also 2 hidden treasures that unlock another ending, as long as you collect 1000000 dollars. Overall, Ducktales is an all time classic and shouldn't be dismissed as strictly a children's game. If you accidentally played Ducktales Remastered, I recommend you try this instead. Less talk more action. And if you want more Retro Reviews start a dialogue in the comments and share this video with some friends.
