Retro Revival, Part #42 - The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard (2015, GOG.COM)
After the release of Daggerfall (1996), Bethesda went through a short but interesting phase during which the developer tried to expand the Elder Scrolls series into other genres than open world RPGs. The result was two flawed but extremely interesting experimental releases; Battlespire (1997) and Redguard (1998). Whereas the former tried to turn TES into a pure dungeon crawler, Redguard was an ambitious and somewhat unexpected attempt to marry the deep lore of Tamriel with a character-oriented action adventure. The infamous XnGine (versatile as it was at the time) is barely capable of handling the massive 3D environments and the tank controls are clunky at best, but the extensive and fully voiced dialogue system really helps to bring the island of Stros M'Kai to life.
I never bought a retail copy of Redguard and only played the demo version at the time of its original release, but I remember liking the idea of an action adventure set in a typically open-ended Bethesda game world (albeit much smaller in size than their mainline RPGs). The game's re-release on GOG.COM is great news, indeed...
