It still blows my mind how great Deus Ex Human Revolution turned out a decade after it's release.

Human Revolution was a follow-up to one of the most beloved games of all time. When the original developers of Deus Ex, Ion Storm, took a crack at a sequel, they fell short.

Eidos Montreal, a newly founded studio under the Eidos umbrella with none of the original developers, had an incredible challenge ahead of them. Develop an immersive sim that while beloved by players, more often than not never had huge sales numbers. Develop a Deus Ex game that takes a more streamlined approach compared to the original, but still produces something the hardcore fans will enjoy and not lose the heart of the original.

After years of hard development, Deus Ex Human Revolution was met with critical and commercial success, introducing many to the franchise, and (for the most part) satisfying series veterans.

While it's not as good as Deus Ex (granted, what is), Human Revolution was a product that is more than worthy of having the Deus Ex name attached to it. Even with a more streamlined approach and using many popular game design trends at the time, Human Revolution never once feels like a design-by-committee game, something that most large-budget games started to shift towards in the late 2000s, and something that continues to this day.

And while it's tragic, or as JC would say, what a shame, that Eidos Montreal's fate is now to work on Marvel IPs, a fate in which, to paraphrase Adam Jensen, they never asked for this, let's look back at what put the studio's name on the map, their first title, Human Revolution.

From it's incredible art direction and music, memorable characters, and plenty of vent crawling, Human Revolution is one of the best titles in the last decade, of the 2010s, and a great immersive sim.

This Human Revolution review/analysis/retrospective/critique will look at how Human Revolution came together, the key pillars of gameplay, the plot, the game's strengths and shortcomings, the Missing Link DLC, how it compares to Mankind Divided, and more.
