Rick and Morty Season 8 Struggles With Time Loops — But Here's Why I Think It Can Work
#rickandmorty #rick #morty
In the first story of Ricky and Morty #49, the elder of the two wakes up to discover that he and his grandson's garbage-made spaceship is about to crash. They discover two lifeless bodies that resemble themselves after crash-landing on a different planet from a ship that looks exactly like theirs. Rick dismisses it in favor of leaving the planet, but when he wakes up from another nap, the scene is exactly the same, with Morty not remembering the first time they discovered their counterparts' dead bodies. Rick and Morty are "in Groundhog Day, boyeeeeeee!" according to Sanchez.
A fan base and creative team who have been waiting years to see such a time loop plotline for Rick and Morty find Rick's excitement about finally realizing his Groundhog Day fantasy almost meta. Throughout the remainder of the comic, Rick makes use of the time loop by gambling, playing video games, binge-watching TV shows, learning how to juggle, drinking without getting a hangover, and other pursuits. When he eventually grows tired of this life, he miraculously learns that a Fracture Quantum Anomaly Crystal is the source of the time loop. Everything returns to normal after the crystal is destroyed.
