Showing my Ricoh 35mm SLR and my Nikon DSLR cameras and some of the photos I've taken with them over the years. I really waited WAY too long to get a DSLR to be honest I should have bought one YEARS ago! But in the short time I've had it I've gotten some great photos. Learning the camera is key. Understanding ISO, shutter speed, Aperture size etc goes a long way and knowing when to use manual focus or just let auto focus have at it. Taking images in RAW format gives you a lot more options in editing. You can really bring out more detail in the highlights and shadows than you could if you had saved in JPEG. The file size isn't that much bigger either (from apx 15MB per image to 20MB) so there's no reason not to. The first day I bought this camera was to get pictures of a B52 bomber that was landing at a nearby airport and I had the camera set to defaults (JPEG not RAW) and had it in Auto mode. Considering I didn't know how to use the camera that day at least I got some usable photos and video from it. I also saw some A10's and F15's that day!

If you're into photography and haven't done so yet you really should get yourself a cheap DSLR. Many photographers are constantly upgrading their gear so there's a lot of used cameras on the market. One thing to remember is the price of lenses and extras like batteries. When looking at used cameras take into account the costs of these extras. Lenses can get VERY expensive and even $100 for brand name batteries isn't unheard of.
