Rin - Vtube Avatar design process (Start to Finish!)
I was going to do a voiceover for this, but it’s tough for me to talk 30 minutes straight. Plus, I don’t think you guys want to listen to me for half an hour :p
I’m going to be showing you the sped up process of making my Hollow Knight OC, Rin, in Live2D. This project has taken over 17 HOURS to complete and a few more hours for compiling all the footage. This is not a tutorial, but I hope to make one in the future. This is my second model I’ve ever made, and I’ve learned quite a lot since starting Live2D. I’m no expert and I still have tons to learn, but I’m really happy with the results so far, and more importantly, it works!
Rin is a snow flea springtail with a head covered with pincushion moss. It's actually a huge coincidence that I designed her first, then found a bug that suited her perfectly! She’s inspired from the little mosscreeps in Greenpath. I love moss and ferns, so they’re my favorite enemy! The two antennae on the top of her head are her actual antennae, while the ones on the side are from the moss. She’s not a very great fighter, much like how I’m not very good at Hollow Knight. She doesn’t have any grand destiny or ambition or anything; she simply has a case of wanderlust, which is difficult considering all the enemies lurking around and her lack of skill. Rin sports a bone sword, formed in the shape of a screw. Some people noticed that she has orange eyes, which is a dead giveaway that the host has the infection. I don’t know if I want Rin to have the infection, or it’s imitation, or pure coincidence, so I’ll just let you decide for yourself.
I’m hoping to start using her for Silksong livestreams in the future, and finish up the Hollow Knight game on my own time. My schedule’s really busy, and it’s hard to be more active on youtube, especially since making the actual art takes super long to do.
For learning how to work in Live2D, I mostly watched a scattering of tutorials from Syafire, Kima Omorichi, and Dream Trove, and a few others.
What’s nice is that I don’t have to worry about rigging a mouth or eyebrows. I kinda wish I made more expression with the eyes, but it’ll have to do for now. I don’t know if there’s a way to add photoshop layers to an existing model, ‘cause I was wanting to change my human avatar clothes to match the game I’m playing, but I don’t know if I’d have to rig everything else from scratch.
I first started really wanting to make my own vtuber avatar after watching a few clips of Korone. I don’t really watch her, but I was very interested in the dress-up aspect of v-tubing. That’s actually why I tried out VR Chat. I was hoping to find models of characters I liked, but unfortunately they didn’t have them, and the social environment wasn’t to my taste. With Live2D, I can draw any avatar I want exactly how I want them! I’d love to make a new avatar every Halloween as my “costume” and perhaps sell them on Etsy! The problem is with copyright and balancing this with all the other projects I want to work on. Like I’ve said before, my daily schedule is mostly filled with things other than art that need attending to, so my “art time” is fairly limited.
I don’t think I’ll take commissions, because freelancing hasn’t really worked out for me. I’ve only had a couple experiences where the commission was fun and rewarding, but most of the time it’s very stressful because of my perfectionism and client wants. I think it would be far less pressure for me to make models I like and sell them if people like them, rather than being told what to do.
I’m sure there’s a way to make all the parts of the head stay attached to the head as it tilts to the left or the right, which would make everything a little faster. It’s a little annoying that the head only fully tilts when it’s facing the center, and the breathing only works when facing the center too. I just don’t know how to make it work yet.
I was having the hardest time getting Live2D to work in OBS. I followed video tutorials to the letter, but it didn’t seem to be working. My husband helped me out, and we realized that OBS was downloaded in the C drive, while PrprLive was downloaded in the D drive. We simply uninstalled OBS and put it into the D drive, and everything worked out just as it should! Most computers don’t have multiple drivers, which is why we couldn’t find anything online to help. Thank you hon!
