Road Rash (3DO)
Electronic Art's Fighting/Superbike Racing spectacular made popular on the 16-bit Sega Genesis/Mega Drive makes it's debut on the next gen 32-bit 3DO on January 1st of 1994.
This game was the Road Rash that many Genesis/Mega Drive owners loved turned up to 11! Absolute top of the line graphics, a kickass heavy rock soundtrack and awesome cut-scene FMV's mixed in with the familiar Road Rash formula made for one totally amazing game. It really was like nothing else I had seen or played in early 1994, a time before the Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn and even the 32X!
The only problem? It was on the 3DO, a system witch virtually no one owned at the time. I was lucky enough to have played the game back in the day first at a Compucenter store and later by renting a 3DO system from my local video rental shop. But most people didn't see or play this game until it was ported to the later released Sony PlayStation in late December of 1995. This is literally TWO years after its initial release on the 3DO. So even those who where lucky enough to get the top of the line Sony PlayStation console when it launched in North America in late 1995 for $299.99 USD may not have even realized this "new" game was already dated by two years.
Truth is most people didn't even get a Sony PlayStation when it launched in North America because there weren't many great launch titles, Sony was new to the market and the price was still high compared to the SNES witch in late 1995 was still steadily selling. Most people got the PlayStation much later after May of 1996 when the first major price drop brought the price to a more reasonable $199.99 USD. By then this game was coming on three years old, long gone and forgotten by the masses. It's safe to say the 3DO in general was forgotten by the masses but the fact is it did bring us next gen games in 1993-1994 before the big guys at Sega and Sony and this game in particular was one of the best.
