In this video I'm doing dialogue audio examples of the Rode SmartLav+ omni directional electret condenser Lavalier microphone with Rode's RODELink wireless system.

While this test is primarily to gauge the quality of the SmartLav+ with RODELink wireless system. It also gives a bit of insight as to the differences in audio quality when using them with a camcorder, an Android SmartPhone and an iOS Smartphone.

In this microphone test I'm using the Sony FDR-AX100 camcorder as the example for recording to a camcorder. A Google Pixel MK1 is used as the Android example and an Apple iPhone 5 is used for the iOS example.

This test also shows that the vast majority of hiss and noise is actually a product of the microphone inputs of SmartPhones, evident by the very low noise floor shown on the Sony AX100.

As well as demonstrating the SmartLav+ and RODELink, I hope this video also shows that the common assumption of the SmartLav+ being a noisy microphone, is wrong. It really is down to what's used to power, preamp & convert it. Again, evident by the results of the Sony AX100 camcorder.

In the Iphone 5 example the picture is suffering serious interpolation problems. There was no way around this as the recording app itself had used incorrect file headers to signal frame rate, which meant that my NLE could't read out the frames correctly. This is not a problem of the iPhone.

To be fair, the Pixel also suffered this problem of incorrect frame rate, due to using FilmicPro. Although, in that instance my NLE was able to identify the incorrect frame rate of the FilmicPro video files and re-time them to 25FPS.

For its price, I think the SmartLav+ is a very good lavalier, clip on, lapel microphone. All things considered, the price of the SmartLav+ makes it a budget microphone and a good one at that. While it's usually seen as a TRRS mic designed for SmartPhones and other devices that use the TRRS wiring/socket. Its 3.5mm TRRS male jack can easily be converted for use with a typical TRS 3.5mm input device, such as a camcorder or DSLR etc. as was the case to connect the SmartLav+ to the RODELink.
