A Gallic army marches into northern Italy at the behest of the beleaguered Italian Gallic Tribes who are trying to resist the expanding might of Rome. After inflicting a series of serious defeats upon the Romans, the Gauls attempt to return home, their wagons heavy with treasure. However, the Romans are determined not to let their humiliation go unavenged.

In a last ditch attempt to stop the Gauls Rome has mustered two great armies to confront them. One bars the passage home and another lands around their back to complete the encirclement. The Gauls only have a tiny window of time to act before they are crushed between two Roman armies, and even if they can beat the Romans in front of them, can a Gallic army really confront not one but two Roman armies on the same day?

---

This was a nightmare and I really did need to watch someone else who was better at the game do it first. At least I learned a lot about how to concentrate my forces and take the momentum out of the enemy's attacks while still being mindful of flanking opportunities. A big shout out to Prince of Macedon as I would have been there for a long LONG time without his video to reference.

You first of all need to send your cavalry to defeat the Roman cavalry that charge you. Send some infantry to help the ones on the left or else you'll find the Roman cavalry can beat yours one on one. Keep the dogs in reserve or else you'll have nothing to unleash on the second Roman army that assaults you. When the Roman infantry advance, hit any units that run forward and expose themselves. You can surround and quickly break them only to turn on the remaining units. Slowly surround and envelop the Romans and digest them until they break. Make sure you also get the velites as they will torment you for the rest of the battle if you let them live.

Once you're done, you'll need to get your troops up onto the ridge to the left of your starting position to have a hope of success. Your cavalry can stay on the low ground and make periodic charges if they survived. If not just gather their remnants in the back ranks. Put the infantry that still have the most strength in the first rank, the warband in the second to make up numbers and form a reserve once the energy of the Roman charge is exhausted, and then put the remnant units and the dogs in the rear.

The second Roman army should exhaust themselves coming up the hill at you. Hit them hard as soon as they come into pilum range. Send the dogs in as well and they should cripple the morale of the hastati and principes who will quickly give ground and flee. The Roman general is reckless and will likely get himself killed at some point in the fighting. Eventually you'll be left with the triarii and the archers who thankfully normally prove ineffective in the fight. Once those blasted Roman spearmen break and flee you'll be pleased to know the horror is over and the few remaining Gauls in your army can limp back home in something resembling triumph. The only battle harder than this is probably Cannae.
