In this episode of Rookie Reviews we take a look at Raft, a first-person survival game that puts you in the shoes of a survivor of a flooded world.
Throut the course of your journey, you'll fend off shark attacks, starvation and dehydration while you float around and upgrade your raft.
The end goal of the game is to find habitable land and other surviors but most islands you come across tend to be desesrted and filled with dangerous wildlife and survivor notes.

The main gameplay loop of the game is sailing and gathering resources which can be used to expand and upgrade the raft as well as keeping your hunger and thirst in check. While such mechanics are standard for survival games the thirst and hunger tend to be a nuisance since they deplet to critical levels at the worst possible moments. While this can be countered by carrying food and water with you around it takes up inventory space which forces you to retreat to the raft in order to empty your inventory and back again. This isn't a problem on smaller islands but once you get on a big island with wild animals you'll spend more time running and avoiding, you won't have the time or energy to continue gathering resources.

The game has a few collision and clipping issues that make the combat less than enjoyable. Sometimes a hit that should connect will pass thru the opponents like thin air and sometimes you'll hit air and kill a willd boar behind you.

If you ignore the combat and occasional item disappearance (they fell thru the floor or just got deleted from your inventory), Raft is a pretty fun game you can play on your own or with a group of friends. Just make sure that you have a dedicated host since the game doesn't have dedicated servers.
