It took me a few weeks to get back into swing of things but Rookie Reviews is back in action. Apologies for the sudden hiatus but I started college again so it took some time to organize my schedule.
In this episode we take a look at Neocore Games Warhammer 40 000 Inquisitor - Martyr, a 3rd person action game set in the Warhammer universe.
The game takes heavy inspiration from Diablo and Path of Exile in terms of gameplay and Warhammer's rule set/mythos. You chose a class and run around various maps while you kill the alien, the mutant, the heretic and the daemon.
While the core gameplay is fun it is heavily held back by the "Always-online" requirements that make the game very frustrating if your network connection is non-existent and the game will prioritize your gamepad/controller as the only input source.
Graphically, the game looks like a Warhammer game but there is something off about the visual effects and character detail that won't ruin the expirience but when you notice it, it will annoy you to no end.
Sound effects, music and voice lines sound great and there's nothing to complain there.
Story is interesting but the pacing is somewhat broken, if you take a side mission a character you're supposed to meet later in the story will contact you periodically to provide logistical support or to issue new objectives within the mission. Once you meet the said characters, you will unlock new modes of play and that serves as the incentive to progress thru the story.
To sum this whole thing: Game's good, visual and audio presentation's good. The controlls are messy but you can fix them easily. If your network is bad, you won't be able to play since the game's Always-online.
Should you buy? Yes, if you wish to play with friends, but wait for a sale.
