UPDATE: In order to run the friction heater method in the desert you need to heat it higher than 1000 and then dial back the power. Give it 512Nm at 1024rad/s until it hits 1100C and then quickly cut it down to 256Nm. It will cool down to 1004C rather than 1000C.

If you set your Blast Furnace up in the Nether, you only need 65kW of power at 64Nm of torque and 1krad/s with a Friction Heater to smelt bedrock ingots. Due to the high ambient temperature.
