Russia will complete the construction of the Arctic nuclear-powered ice breaker by 2020
The construction of the Arctic universal nuclear-powered icebreaker will be completed by 2020, according to a government resolution posted on the government's legal information web portal on Friday.
Previous versions of government resolutions indicate that ice breakers will be built in 2019. Investment in the Arctic icebreaker project remains unchanged at around 37 billion rubles ($ 572 million).
Russia plans to build a serial nuclear-powered icebreaker produced by Sibir in 2021 and a Ural icebreaker in 2022. Investments in the construction of icebreakers will reach around 41 billion rubles ($ 634 million) and 42 billion rubles ($ 649 million ), respectively, said the document.
Three Project 22220 nuclear-powered universal ice breakers Arktika, Sibir and Ural are currently being built at Galtiysky Shipyard. The ice breaker will operate a new generation of nuclear reactors. Overall, the concept of developing a nuclear-powered ice breaker fleet carried out by Russian civilian nuclear power company Rosatom envisions building five ice breakers produced by Project 22220. The fourth serial ice breaker will be operational in 2024 and the fifth in 2027.
