Time for the nitty gritty, the first boss you'll likely run into in Ashes of Ariandel is the gravetender and his wolves. This fight is frustrating, it's annoying, but it's easy if you have the right setup and mindset.

When the fight starts, you'll be up against the gravetender and 3 small wolves. Kill the small wolves first, running away helps as usually the gravetender does not sprint after you. He usually elects to jog slowly so take advantage.

After the wolves are dead, it's a 1vs1. If you're a melee build this is much easier because he CAN be guard broken. Be careful employing this too often though as he can guard and attack at the same time. He also can somehow with regularity hit behind him with his swings. So it's something to look out for.

When he reaches 50% ish hp he'll motion for a brief moment. Seize this moment to unload all the damage you can because you want him dead BEFORE the surprise shows up. If this isn't possible, then focus one down quickly (whichever one you think will be faster and safer) Normally this will be the main boss but.. there are exceptions.

The wolf itself is very intimidating but not very dangerous once you're used to it's move-set. It can bite up to 3 times in a row, this is easily roll through-able. Also a great time to get some damage in. It can lower it's head and headbutt you into the air doing really good damage, again dodge left or right when you see it coming. It's most notable attack is the charges, a lot of times you'll see a wind "distortion" before it charges so it makes it a bit easier to dodge. It can charge up to 3 times before it momentarily rests so make sure to count. Last thing you want is to play joust against a ticked off giant wolf. You WILL lose that one Lancelot.

When the wolf gets to around 50% it howls giving you a phenomenal chance to get hits in. After this it usually prepares an ice breath. This move flipping hurts! It can one shot a 27 vigor character in ng+. (poor Veronica got caught a few times) The best way to avoid this is to be close, and behind it. If that's not an option then RUN backwards. Seriously don't tank it, unless it's regular NG then you'll probably be fine.. probably.

In this phase it's charges change timing so be aware the same roll timings can get you killed now. It's exceedingly hard to explain but this will be likely what kills you. (it's what killed me first time)

Oh and occasionally it'll do a back jump to gain distance in phase 1 or 2 of it's life. It doesn't seem to do anything but stagger you if you're under it. Then again that's only happened to me once and I was kinda near the edge of it's hitbox.. it could very well crush you, I don't know.

Overall, it's an annoying fight until it's just you and the wolf left.. then it's actually fun! No seriously, this giant wolf is actually fun to fight by itself for me.
