A playthrough of Konami's 1994 platformer for the Sega Genesis, Sparkster.

Played through on the hard mode.

For those of you familiar with Sparkster on the SNES, this one might look a bit strange. Even though the Genesis and SNES games share the same name, they are actually completely different games.

The Genesis game, originally titled Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2 in Japan, is a direct sequel to the excellent Rocket Knight Adventures released the year before.

The biggest change between Rocket Knight Adventures and Sparkster is the way you launch your o'possum into the air with his jetpack. Whereas in the first game you had to hold a button to charge, the gauge automatically refills when empty in this one, and it does so much more quickly than before. It might sound like a small change, but the difference it makes to the speed of the game is pretty dramatic. Not only can you fling yourself around everywhere much more easily this time, but you can also keep yourself in the air if you time your boosts well. I really appreciated the change - the speed makes the game quite a bit more fun, and quite a bit more difficult this time around.

You also now have the option to turn into much-improved Gold Sparkster if you collect all seven of the swords hidden throughout the game. Unfortunately you can only use Gold Sparkster at the last boss, but he makes the last boss far less frustrating to beat. I do show it in this video.

The graphics and sound in Sparkster are a nice upgrade over Rocket Knight Adventures. The animation has improved quite a bit, as has the quality of the music and the sound effects, and the improvements made to the controls really make this one a blast.

In all honesty, I have to say that I much prefer the SNES game over the Genesis - the level design, graphics, and music are all far better in that one - but still, this is a great game that tends to get ignored in favor of Konami's bigger titles on the system. If you like a challenge and random animal mascots that don't scream annoying catchphrases at you, this one is definitely a good pick.
