So, I mentioned in my last upload that one of the members of the Supermodel forum decided to have a crack at getting the Supermodel network working full speed using a different method to the current network method, (because that method reduces all the games to half speed), and they'd manged to do it. Daytona USA 2 Power Edition and Battle on the Edge can now be linked up and played full speed.

However, he's also got the network working in Sega Le Mans 24, that previously didn't even work in the old network, so double awesome! An interesting thing about this, is that it fixes another issue with the game. This issue was actually originally noted by the creator of the revised network, gm_matthew. To slightly paraphrase what he put on the Supermodel forum:

"If you've played Le Mans 24 on Supermodel, you may notice that no matter how well you do, you never seem to be able to reach 1st place (or even close) in the 24 hour race. The reason for this is that not enough cars appear for the player to overtake.

However, I've noticed something since then. In the game, you see enemy cars pop up in both their original colours (which you can choose) and also their alternate colours. For example, the main colour of the Ferrari is red, and the alternate colour is blue and yellow.

What I've noticed is that running the 24 hour race on Supermodel, the alternate colours of cars never appear. In the actual arcade game, the alternate coloured cars appear just as frequently as the main coloured ones, this means more cars to overtake. Some cars are to be lapped, these are only ever alternate coloured cars (which never show up in Supermodel, hence you never lap any cars). Funnily enough, in the 24 hour race, no McLarens ever appear. This is not a Supermodel bug since they don't appear in the actual game either.

In a nutshell, for every 5 cars you pass using Supermodel, you should actually have passed 7 and lapped 3 (it seems that 3 of the 5 alternate cars are to be lapped)."

It turns out the "missing" cars only show up if the game is running in linked mode."

It's crazy, but it's true. The amount of times using my wheel I've had a 'serious' attempt at trying to get a decent finishing place in Le Mans, and I normally always end up in 6th place. I managed to come in 4th one time after assigning myself the 'special' car. Welp, first time using the Le Mans Network, in this very video, just using a pad, not putting any thought into how I was racing, I managed to come 2nd (I'd made the Ferrari the special car, so obviously that helped)

At one point I wasn't even looking at my screen, I actually came to a complete stop, so I could swap back to P2 to coin up and start a game on that 'machine', before swapping back to P1. When the time ran out on P2 and I did the same, stopped to coin up and start again.

At one point I'd crashed so many times my car caught fire (something I've never seen before!) and I looked like one of the boss cars that'd be on the receiving end of a repeated rear ending from the Porsche in Chase HQ. I pitted in to repair the damage, which also gave me a chance to try and shunt player 2 onto the track on the way out. And I still came 2nd! Insane.

I hadn't realised on this initial playthrough, that the attract mode on the Player 2 machine was acting as a live cam of my race. The attract mode says about the race always being on and I used to think that just meant if you were playing in multiplayer, another player could jump in anytime. But I think what it actually means is that the race starts once the machine is turned on and is constantly going the whole time the machine is on, regardless of whether an actual player is actually playing it. Which would make sense as, when I've played two more games in a row, the starting weather and night/day conditions vary themselves each time. So, if I'm right, the attract mode in the game is actually live footage of the ongoing race that never stops. Man, that's so clever.
