Sentimental Shooting Gameplay on DOSBOX-Pure
Anyone who is a Steam user like me remember this little game series called Deep Space Waifu, that had apparently just been delisted entirely not too long before this video was posted? With the latest game in the series that was formally announced in October 2019, but was stuck in Vaporware for a large number of years until the series' recent delisting effectively cancelled its way-too-long-awaited release? I for one always remember the game series very fondly when I came across it in the Summer of 2018, just around the time when H-Mania really took off there on Steam, with titles such as Deep Space Waifu (obviously), Mirror and Meltys Quest being the quintessential contributors to how Steam was ultimately set ablaze because of an iconic "hook" that they had. And who else could also remember this hardcore 80's snythwave banger of a soundtrack, courtesy of Canadian artist Funny Death?
It's pretty sad that this legendary game series has now completely disappeared, and from what I discovered, the former Brazilian developers had just rebranded themselves as HAMMER95, where they went on to make the critically-acclaimed roguelike shooter Mullet Mad Jack, and seem to heavily disavow any knowledge of their involvement in making Deep Space Waifu, or its existence.
Apparently, from what I have just learned, this incredibly obscure NSFW doujin game by the name of Sentimental Shooting, made in 1998 for Windows 9x operating systems by a doujin group called white(1) and features characters from a dating sim series of games called Sentimental Graffiti, made by NEC Interchannel as a direct competitor to Konami's Tokimeki Memorial series, is where Deep Space Waifu got its influence from.
And because this is a game designed for those Windows 9x operating systems, it can easily be played on DOSBOX-Pure. However, while the music plays fine, the gameplay slows down MASSIVELY, even with Frame Skip turned on. I'm not sure if it's either the game doing that, or that the game is intended to be played on more advanced hardware cards that the emulator currently lacks the functionalities of, despite being strictly a 2D game which should run fine.
Now, as is the case with many many other doujin games, both past and present and regardless if they come from Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea or even the west or elsewhere, it is obviously NSFW. Therefore, as Deep Space Waifu was a "Strip-Em-Up" which involved damaging the clothes of a particular girl in the background for high scores, I tried to not damage as much clothing as possible, in order to keep this video entirely SFW and to keep it in tandem with YouTube's obviously-strict community guidelines. Fortunately, there is a setting in the game that turns off the boss fights at the end of a stage, which is, for someone trying to keep gameplay footage of an otherwise NSFW title SFW, a true godsend. Thankfully, the large yellow chick the girl (Who is named Emiru, judging from the use of Hiragana in her name that I was able to read) is holding, which essentially looks alot like the Manjuu bird from Azur Lane, is the one piece that I can destroy for this video.
I am of course a very proud fan of these types of games, hence how Mirror, Meltys Quest and even Deep Space Waifu, completely shaped me of what I am today. Consider this gameplay footage as a little tribute and last respect paid to the game that was heavily influenced by this title.
R.I.P. Deep Space Waifu... Thanks for the amazing memories... You will NEVER be truly forgotten!
