Serf 'n Turf - Episode 1: A Swine in the Sand

Now that I've wrapped up those two Kirby games, it's time to sink my teeth into something with a little more substance. Demon Turf is another one of those games that I was excited about when I first picked it up... but it ended up getting buried in my backlog. Fortunately, KI's a huge fan of this game -- calling it one of the best 3D platformers they've played since Super Mario Odyssey -- and decided to nominate it for the Platformerama.
My first impressions are that this game reminds me a lot of a different game entirely: Sonic Robo Blast 2, a popular fan game built on the Doom engine of all things. Granted, a lot of that may just come from the fact that this game also uses 2D characters in a 3D environment. The momentum also feels significantly looser than most modern examples of 3D platformers coming from the mainstream, allowing players to get creative with the physics to either create massive shortcuts or get to locations they shouldn't be able to reach. I'd say "they don't make games like that anymore", but it's clear that this style is seeing a resurgence throughout the indie scene these days.
I did weigh the option of going for a full 100% run in this game for this stream, but this first session immediately killed the plan. Of course, considering the fact that it took KI just under 30 hours to do such a thing -- and I've got nowhere as much skill with 3D platformers -- it just seems more reasonable to do a barebones run this time and possibly revisit it on Play Extend! down the line. Honestly, I considered doing the same with Neon Splash anyway.
On the plus side, I did manage to make it through the first world, despite my difficulties with the learning curve. In the process, I ended up unlocking the hookshot... which feels like it's going to make things even more fun. From the looks of it, there are three or four more new abilities waiting for me as well and I can't wait to check them out.
