I have very fond memories of the DBZ Super Butouden games on the Super Nintendo, growing up as a Dragon Ball fan in the early 2000s these were among the first games I've emulated on ZSNES, I've played them a lot back then with my cousin and some friends, and we used to have a blast!

Or at least we thought we were having a blast... You see, these games are really not very good, no wonder they've never looked back since they got their hands on Budokai Tenkaichi 3...
I however did go back, again and again, because as good as Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is, it's not a traditional fighting game, therefore it's not my kind of fighting game, and as far as I was concerned, the Super Butouden games were as close we had gotten to a traditional DBZ fighter... Either them or DBZ Hyper Dimension, which honestly, I could never get into, it's just too slow...

Yeah I know there were more DBZ fighting games in many other systems, too many to count in fact, but for the longest time the Super Butouden games were the closest things I knew to the DBZ fighting game I wanted to play, even though they were so clunky and unresponsive... Ultimate Butouden on the DS was a lot better though, in fact it's the closest you can get to a decent traditional fighter on the DS, but even that one is closer to what the Budokai (without Tenkaichi) games were doing back in the early 2000s on PS2, rather than the Capcom/SNK style that I'm much more fond of... And then there's Extreme Butouden on the 3DS which is... Kind of bleh to be honest... That one is for casuals (read: Smash players)

But then a while back, with the announcement of Dragon Ball FighterZ (which I'm really looking forward to btw) I also found out about Hyper DBZ, which is a MUGEN-based DBZ fan-game which IS the DBZ fighting game that I've always wanted to play! I've considered using footage from that game in this video because it's just SO MUCH FUN to play, but in the end I've decided to use footage from the original game that this song belongs to, even though I've replaced Hyper DBZ's soundtrack with the soundtracks from the Super Butouden games...

Don't get me wrong, Hyper DBZ's soundtrack is fine, I don't mind it, but I just LOVE the Super Butouden soundtracks, even if the games aren't that good, if there's one thing they got right it's the music! (Maybe the graphics too, they look fine) I've heard from some people that the music from these games (particularly the 2nd one) don't fit the action that they're seeing on the screen, and I can see where they're coming from, but DBZ fighting action without Super Butouden music just feels off to me personally, it feels kind of wrong in a certain way, but that's probably my nostalgia speaking...

If you haven't played any of DBZ Super Butouden games and are curious about them, don't bother, wait until Dragon Ball FighterZ comes out and play that instead, or even better, go and play Hyper DBZ, it's out right now, it's an absolute blast, and it's free!
But if you MUST play them for whatever reason, play either Ultimate Butouden on the DS, or the 2nd game on Super Nintendo, the DS one is the best, but it's not very representative of what the series was like back in the day, of the 3 SNES games, the 2nd one is the best, the first is just too clunky, and the 3rd is just the same game as the 2nd but without a Story Mode or even a normal Arcade Mode, only Vs and Tournament (although you can still play it in Single Player unlike certain modern fighters from a certain famous fighting-game-making company if you know what I mean)
Overall, these games are best appreciated from a distance... Just go listen to their soundtracks, they're good!
