Shadowrun Returns: Dead Man’s Switch Part 46: The End
So, as we are drawing the to the end of yet another game, I guess it’s time to ramble on about my final thoughts with the game. As per usual, if for whatever reason you missed the entire game up to this point, there will be some spoilers so prepare yourself. Overall, I really enjoyed playing this game even though I have literally no experience/knowledge of the Shadowrun role playing game that this is based off of (I assumed most people watching this might’ve known that but, for those that don’t, the more you know). What really interested me about this game was the combination of cyberpunk and fantasy characters, set in a dystopian world ruled by corporations (A Better Bright movie if you will, Kappa). What really helps you get involved with the world is the amazing writing and descriptions you get throughout the game; it really just ties the whole game together. I’ve not played too many tactical rpg’s like this before (I’ve only dabbled in a few others like the newer XCOM games) so I don’t really know how “well” the combat system in this game is. Personally, I rather enjoyed it but would’ve liked more action points though out the game or allowed each character to automatically reload at the end of their turns so the later fights with the bugs went a little faster (trying to murder two versions of every enemy before being able to move was a little tedious). On a similar topic, there were sections that we could only move as though we were in combat which, part of me understands (it might’ve been a little annoying trying to get into cover when initiating a fight) but it was rather tedious to move, pass the turn to no-one before moving again. Other than that, I really loved the story (especially ones with weird crazy-ass turns like this one), the characters were pretty cool although I would’ve liked to see more of some of them (like Shannon Half-Sky who only really appeared at one point within the game) and the combat within the game was pretty fun (even though I let one of my crew members freaking die but that was definitely my own fault). My other real complaint is that the story felt a little short however, considering the crazy twists and turns and the fact that other people can create their own stories for others to play (that being the Workshop of Steam), I can understand why it ended when it did. I don’t really know the quality of the player-made campaign’s (not saying their all bad, I just don’t want to have a trial and error process of weeding out the bad ones) but, if anyone has any suggestions I would totally look into it. I think what I will be doing with this series is recording the main storyline that comes with the game and stream any player-made campaign’s that people want to see (and if I think are interesting; I don’t think I would be up to play something called “You’ll never beat this” campaign or something dumb like that).
