Welcome to Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, a game that is widely regarded as a franchise failure for bearing the Final Fantasy name. It was released to the North American market on the heels of Final Fantasy IV (or Final Fantasy II in the US) and so Final Fantasy fans were expecting another epic tale full of characters, plot twists, and challenges. What they got was a simplified, entry level, beginner friendly (perhaps kid friendly), Japanese style RPG experience with one of the most badass soundtracks to ever grace the Super Nintendo Entertainment System/Super Famicom. Something that the fanbase found alienating. To this day, Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest gets at best a lukewarm if not downright chilly reception - with notable exception to the game's soundtrack.
Known in Japan as Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest, and in the PAL region as Mystic Quest: Legend, this game holds a special place in my heart and I spent many an hour playing through the story well into my teen years. Here I want to share with you my experience with this game, and the story of a young boy named Benjamin who is thrust by destiny, prophecy, or just plain old bad luck into saving the world! Can he accomplish the task?
