Shining Force Video Walkthrough Part 2 - Battle 1-1
Our first battle! Let's go!\n\nCommentary:\n0:02 - Battles in this game are done in a turn-based style. Each individual person moves, acts or doesn't act, and then it's the next person's. Same with the enemies. Simple enough.\n0:10 - When you finish moving, you may Stay (end the turn), Item (use an item), Magic (cast a spell), or Attack (hit some fool). Each action except Stay has a range associated with it...and...um...oops, I forgot to give him that herb (I had to re-record part 1). You can transfer items in battle if you're next to the person, for the record.\n0:28 - By pressing B, you can free the cursor. Moving over someone and pressing A gives you a status screen (this works on enemies too). C gives you a quick status. Pressing A or C when not over a unit brings up a menu where you can check a map, quit the game (it saves mid-battle), or change some speed options. Those are the basics, now let's kill some stuff\n0:53 - Ken has a spear...spears can attack at 1 or 2 squares distance. Diagonals count as 2 squares.\n1:16 - Normal weapons can only strike someone adjacent to you. \n1:43 - Spells tend to do consistent damage. Blaze 1 has a range of 1-2 squares, and can only hit one enemy (some spells hit more than one person). Formation is very important in this game, try and keep more vulnerable members like mages and archers behind the tougher fighters.\n2:01 - Arrows can only strike at 2 square range, they cannot strike adjacent targets.\n2:32 - This is a tactic I call "healerkilling", though it helps any class weak in combat. Most of your experience comes from delivering the finishing blow to an enemy. While healers (and only healers) gain experience from healing, it's not a lot, and it only gives experience if damage is actually healed (NOTE: Later games let you gain experience for healing someone who doesn't need it). So, if an enemy is at 1 or 2 HP, send in a healer to whap it to death.\n4:48 - Problem with mages: you oftentimes forget to select your spell. Like here. Once you end your turn, it's over.\n5:39 - This time I remembered. I'm not gonna mention this every time, but you see here the importance of a good formation. The enemies cannot attack my weaker members, they're forced to attack the ones that can take a hit, and those weaker members can attack from behind them.\n6:05 - This is what happens when you level up...stats will randomly increase, and (for casters), a new spell may be learned. If you don't like your level up, you can save before you get one, and try again...but I'm not that nuts about it. I try and keep my levels close to even if I can...if you see me pass up an easy kill, it's usually because I want someone of lower level to get it. The lower level you are, the more EXP you get from a kill, in general.\n8:11 - The Rune Knight here is a "boss monster". If you kill it, you win the fight. This may seem like a good thing, but if you kill him, you miss a ton of XP from the other monsters you could have killed...and if you're repeating battles for experience, you can never go back. Try not to kill bosses until they're last. Not all fights have a boss.
