550Shoot Em' Ups Are NOT a SIMPLE Genre! | Shmup Topic Video. These days, no pet peeve grinds my teeth more than the common refrain that shmups (STG) are a "simple" genre. This seems to be a commonly agreed on understanding and description of the genre. There's only one problem with it ... it is not accurate. In today's video I go over many of the reason why I think youtubers, game journalists, game reviews, and gaming magazines still cling on to this notion that shoot em' ups are "simple." On top of that, I think this ties in with modern views of game design where the game design of the arcade era is outdated and needs to be updated for "contemporary audiences."
