521Natsuki Chronicles Review | Setting a New Horizontal Shoot Em' Up Standard! Studio Qute make their debut on this channel with their latest release, Natsuki Chronicles for the PS4! Natsuki is a classic horizontal shoot em' up (shmup, STG) that doesn't rely on nostalgia or old game design. Instead, Natsuki is a fresh take on the classic formula established by series like Gradius, Darius, R-Type, and Thunder Force with fresh mechanics. To me, based on the design of the warning laser system, the lack of checkpoints, the recharging shields, and generous item drops (with no speed penalty upon death), and consistant difficulty curve, Qute is doing everything in their power to iron out all the wrinkles that makes these older games so memorization heavy and tricky to get into and I think has a lot of great ideas that new entries into the genre should examine.
For those who don't know, Qute also made excllent shmups like Judgement Silverword, Eschatos, and Ginga Force, all with excellent soundtracks (especially Eschatos). The ost in Natsuki is solid as well, but I think a little bit lacking compared to its older siblings.
