We return to the world of survival horror as we take a look and archive the HD remaster for Silent Hill 2. The game originally released on the PlayStation 2, but received an HD remaster for the Xbox 360 with the Silent Hill HD collection. On this disc were both Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 with a few enhancements.
Besides being able to play the game at a higher resolution, there was also brand new voice acting in Silent Hill 2. Now over the years I heard a lot of criticism of fans who disliked the new voices, but I was very surprised to find that you can just switch to the old voice cast as well. The new voice cast are actors like Troy Baker who later received a lot of fame for roles like Joel from The Last of Us or Booker DeWitt in Bioshock Infinite.
I personally don't mind the new voice actors and actually think that a few characters like James and Angela are improved in terms of emotional performance. I do think Maria's new voice does not suit her all that well.
Though I don't think Silent Hill 2 is the scariest horror game ever made, I do think it's the "best" horror game ever made. The story is incredible with deep philosophical questions it raises and every enemy design and location are created in such a way that it has a deeper meaning. The nurses with the open blouses and the distorted faces are there for a reason since they are a metaphor for a dark secret that James carries with him.
Even the first enemy already hints at something as its spitting up goo and is walking in a manner where it resembles a patient stuck in a straight jacket.
Silent Hill 2 is the product of a creative genius that has thought things through to the most miniscule detail. It of course also introduced one of the most iconic enemies in video games in the form of Pyramid Head.
Now even though I do think that the game is the best horror game ever made, it still is not without its faults since the combat is very clumsy and boss fights are very underwhelming most of the time. Silent Hill 3 made a huge improvement in this where it made the combat feel more repsonsive while not making the character too powerful in order to keep the scare factor.
Nevertheless Silent Hill 2 remains a classic that deserves to be played and experienced by any fan of horror- and adventure games. There are very few games that manage to portray a depth and inner meannig to the game's story and setting like Silent Hill 2 does. I believe Cry of Fear is a game that comes close.
I also know that the Silent Hill 2 remake is getting a lot of hatred from many players, but I think its for the wrong reasons. What I love about Silent Hill 2 is its story, the meaning of the enemy design and the levels. The heartbreaking plot twist and the choice that James made for himself. As long as these story beats are also being ported over to the remake I cannot imagine how the game will be bad. People disliked how the combat looked, but the combat was also clunky in the first game. I love Silent Hill 2 very, very much and it was an amazing experience to relive this game with a new voice cast to keep it fresh and I cannot wait to experience this tragic tale again with the remake.
