Personal Tips:
I've gone on to say how this game isn't hard quite a few times, widely known as one of the hardest games of all time, I simply don't get it, It's certainly not anywhere near as difficult as Mega Man 1. Maybe it's the way I play it so I'll try my best to explain.

Upon starting the game head straight to the Possessor level the enemies in this level aren't as vicious as most levels and pretty much don't take over the entire screen like some levels. It's the easiest place to get yourself powered up, make sure to be always shooting and collecting your powerups during this stage.

Next you should be selecting Emperor as this I'd say is the second easiest stage where you can continue to collect powerups if you still need them.

From this point on it doesn't matter where you go as you should be fully powered and now it's only really about remembering what you can touch and where the enemies are coming from. It'll take awhile to get the pattern down but once you do that you are pretty much unstoppable. If you do happen to die during the time, then just be very careful until you get your power back.
