This video showing what is the difference between transistor and mosfet step up booster joule thief circuit. Using 8.3 mH toroidal inductor to step current.

As you can see the transistor operating between minimum 250 mV up to the maximum 1 Volt or so while the mosfet operating at minimum 1.5 volt and maximum 4.5~5.0 volt. Obviously the transistors are suitable for low power application while the mosfet is for high power.

It's a good simple easy circuit for beginners to DIY
