As a new gaming generation loomed, and with the swan-song for classic Final Fantasy behind it in the form of Final Fantasy IX, Squaresoft (now Square Enix) looked for a way to bring the series into the future. It wanted to break with a lot of traditions, especially with its own eurocentric aesthetic history, and in Final Fantasy X they presented something that remains to this day a deeply unique take on the JRPG fantasy genre.

It's a game with a mixed reputation, often dunked on for the occasional awkwardness of its voice-acting and animation, and lambasted for its central love story.
