Sir Alex Ferguson almost retired 11 years early
Sir Alex Ferguson had reached the promised land two years prior, claiming the Treble with Manchester United. The Red Devils had dominated in England, had just won their third successive league titles but consistently disappointed in Europe, unable to follow up on their second European Cup with quarter final exits to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich – two eventual winners. At the start of the 2001-02 season, Ferguson announced his retirement, winning all there was to win. However, he performed a u-turn which granted him a further 12 years at the club as well as six more league crowns and another Champions League, and further immortalisation at Old Trafford.
