Featuring plenty of high-seas adventure, Skull & Crossbones is a really smart coin-op release from Atari Games.

Having had their hold of booty swiped by a nefarious wizard, salty seadog's One-Eye and Red Dog must sail the ocean in search of revenge, liberating wenches and digging up buried treasure along the way. The game features three levels of difficulty, each featuring more enemies and increasingly longer levels. For the most complete experience you'll need to play on "Hard" mode, and this is the mode I recorded for this longplay.

Throughout your adventures you'll cross swords with all manner of scurvy dogs and unsavoury beasts, and the sword fighting mechanics are undoubtedly the game's main selling point. Combat is a fast-paced affair that involves parrying your opponent's attacks and responding with a well-timed counter attack; you can guard against high or low blows, although it's difficult reading the enemy's moves effectively, so employing fancy footwork is an equally good defensive strategy. Perhaps the best advice I can give is to master the lunge, which is far more effective at striking enemies than regular slashes.

Visually, the game is pretty distinctive too, featuring high quality cartoon-style graphics and detailed animation, and the soundtrack is pretty good as well. Probably my favourite feature has to be the parrot which accompanies you on your adventures, squawking "Pieces of eight!" every time you dig up booty and encouraging you to hurry up whenever it thinks you're dawdling.

For those looking for something a little bit different, Skull & Crossbones offers a pretty compelling alternative to the traditional beat 'em up. It's a tough nut to crack, but it's well worth checking out.
