Skyfront VR (Unreal Tournament with a twist) - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
Skyfront is a standard PvP focused arena FPS like Unreal Tournament or Quake in a zero-G environemnt.
I'm not usually a fan of games in this genre as the repetitiveness causes me to quickly lose interest but the zero-G mechanic was pretty interesting and if this is your genre of choice the game felt smooth and fairly polished as far as EA titles go.
As an EA title there are obviously things that it's missing, like ambient sound or background music while in the main menu. Not critical, doesn't impact gameplay but just feels wrong while your there. If those are the types of complaints I have about an EA title, it's doing pretty well.
That being said there were a couple things I'd like to see:
I'd like a brief 'get comfortable' tutorial that lets you practice and get used to the controls. Adapt to the zero-G, etc. You can figure it out however it would be nicer to figure it out while not being shot at.
I seem to have gotten the shotgun stuck on my left hand somehow and I'm not sure why. Some explaination would be nice. I'm perfectly fine with not being able to dual wield the OP shotgun but I'd like to be able to pull it out in whatever hand I'd like as opposed to a preset. This was really the only issue I'd say was a 'bug'.
Other concerns would be locomotion and population.
There are no locomotion options. While I would usually knock the game for this Skyfront does seem like it's a game, like Onward, that falls into that rare group where it makes sense. It's a purely competitive game that revolves around zero-G motion.
I will say that it feels less like trackpad locomotion and more like you're supermaning around the map. The faint of stomach may want to give it a try to see how well you handle it.
Population is the most likely thing to kill this game as a pure PvP game. Even Raw Data is suffering from that at the moment. The devs are working to provide incentives to keep people in the game with the Onslaught challenge and happy hours.
Overall, Skyfront was a solid arena shooter that any fan of the genre would likely enjoy. It offers up exactly what it aims to and thus it gets a thumbs up.
