Last time we recovered the first Aetherium shard in Arkngthamz. Today we'll recover the second and third, while the fourth lies in Raldbthar, which we'll obtain when the Dark Brotherhood questline leads us there.

We start with a sort n' sell of all the loot we acquired from Arkngthamz. That done, our first stop is Deep Folk Crossing in the far northwestern Reach. Instead of heading straight there, though, there is actually a world encounter we can have where we meet two children, Sond and Bottar, who offer to sell us some Dwemer items they've found, as well as the location where they found them (which is in fact Deep Folk Crossing). Supposedly this encounter can happen anywhere, but I swear I've only ever seen it in the Reach. Coincidentally enough, though, Arkngthamz where we were last time is actually a great place to farm world encounters, since there's an encounter location pretty much at the bottom of the stairs.

So we spend a few reloads fast travelling there to see if we can't generate this encounter, and lo and behold it doesn't take many tries before we do. We purchase the items they're carrying, as well as pay a septim for the location. Technically you can intimidate the location out of them, but we respect the gumption of these kids out hustling strangers for money.

Heading to Deep Folk Crossing, there's really nothing there except for the Aetherium shard...which I guess has been just laying out in the open for a few thousand years? I get it, Aetherium is supposedly completely inert and unchangeable outside of the Aetherium Forge, but did the Dwemer really not secure their valuables any better than this? And are we supposed to believe that no one came across it and took it in the last three to four thousand years? Heck, we just talked to two children who admitted to looting Dwemer artifacts from this very place. Did they not think the glowing blue thing was of any value?

Whatever, let's just move on to the next location, which is the Mzulft storeroom. This is a separate small zone located next to the main entrance to Mzulft. We visited this place both during the College of Winterhold main quest that led us to Mzulft as well as the Arniel's Endeavors quest that led us here in search of Dwemer convectors, but we didn't loot it at that time. Now we do, picking up loads of Dwemer materials in addition to the third shard.

As said before, the last shard is in Raldbthar, and the Dark Brotherhood questline will take us there pretty quickly, so we're going to put this quest on the backburner for just a little bit. Next time Grelod the Kind better beware, because we're heading to Riften and we have a black soul gem with her name on it.
