Skyrim 100% Maximized Legendary Playthrough - 305. Whispers in the Dark
We start today by heading back to Whiterun for a desperately needed sort n' sell after clearing out yet another Dwemer ruin. All the vendors in Whiterun aren't enough for us to unload all the spoils, however, but thankfully we have several other cities to visit today.
Our first stop is Solitude where we drop off Alain DuFont's soul gem in Proudspire Manor. After vendoring some more loot, we then head to Markarth to report back to Muiri. She gives us a unique ring for completing the optional objective to kill Nilsine Shatter-Shield. We finish selling off the last bits of loot here, and then it's time to return to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary for the next quest.
Astrid is waiting for us as usual, and she has a special request for us. She thinks Cicero is conspiring with one of the other members against her, and she wants us to eavesdrop on him from inside the Night Mother's coffin, of all places. This is one of the minor flaws of the overall DB questline. Why would Astrid ask *us* to do the eavesdropping? If she's worried about treachery in the Sanctuary, why wouldn't she ask, oh, I don't know, *her husband*, whom she presumably trusts more than anyone else??? In fact, logically *we're* the most likely suspect to be Cicero's conspirator. We're the newest member by far, and thus have the least loyalty to Astrid. Not only that, but Cicero shows up shortly after we do, which could be viewed as a suspicious coincidence.
It would have been nice if later it were revealed that Astrid had some ulterior motive for choosing us, but the game plays it straight. Ultimately it's just an excuse to get us inside the coffin so the Night Mother can talk to us and reveal us to be the next Listener. Astrid needs some time to process everything, so we're sent off to do some more side contracts in the meantime.
While at the Sanctuary, Cicero's journals have now appeared in his room, and we take the time to read them. They're rather lengthy as Skyrim books go, and it's yet another example of how much more effort went into Dark Brotherhood material versus other areas of the game. They do a great job of chronicling Cicero's descent into madness as the other Sanctuaries of Cyrodiil gradually fell and one by one he lost all his remaining fellow assassins, ultimately to be left tending the Night Mother all alone. It paints a 3D picture of him and makes him one of the most memorable NPCs in the game.
Once we're done in the Sanctuary we have one more item of business to chase up on - we travel to Windhelm and enter the House of Clan Shatter-Shield, only to find that in the wake of the deaths of both of her daughters, Tova Shatter-Shield has committed suicide. Muiri has her revenge to the fullest now, and if it weren't for Serana she would be a strong candidate for our spouse in this game. Afterwards we find Torbjorn just to get a little bit of new dialogue from him in reaction to the events, and then we head back home to wrap up. Next time we'll finish up Lost to the Ages.
