Certain objects, namely bob-ombs and cork boxes, are programmed to unload if they come into contact with the death barrier. I show that it is possible to take advantage of this in order to grab these objects fake.

The only way to delve into the death barrier unharmed is for Mario to collect a star off the edge, and then he will be protected until the end of his star dance. But instead of stars, I use star clones, which allows me to place the stars exactly where and when they need to be. Unfortunately, Mario only has a small window of opportunity to grab the fake objects right after his star dance, and so he cannot do much with them.

Pulling this off is incredibly hard. It requires very precise timing and positioning, for both Mario and the object. Especially because the object must be approaching the death barrier without Mario's guidance and at a slow enough pace so that Mario can get into position first. I used that specific platform in Rainbow Ride because it was so close to the death barrier that the bob-omb did not disappear from being too far away after Mario dropped. (Note that bob-ombs, although still loaded, will disappear and remain motionless, as see at 1:11.) Had I used a higher platform, the bob-omb would have disappeared before it walked off the edge, and then would remain motionless on the platform instead of dropping off to Mario. In Whomp's Fortress, I used the water to slow down the cork box's descent, which gave me ample time to get into position.
