Smack Birdo with a Shy Guy in Level 1 (Super Mario Bros 2, NES) - A Wild Glitch Appears!
5,583This short video showcases two separate glitches that are essential to the speedrun strategy of Level 1-1 in Super Mario Bros 2 for the NES. Ultimately, the goal is to bring a Shy Guy to the boss fight, which allows you to defeat Birdo much faster than the normal egg-tossing strategy.
The first step is to grab the red potion and throw it on top of the POW Block. Enter the door to Subcon, then exit back to the real world. On the EXACT frame you re-enter the normal level, press B to lift the POW Block. If you did it correctly, you should see the POW Block sitting on your character's head, but you cannot throw the POW Block.
Now, make your way up to the door on top of the ledge near the log bridge. Luigi should have no problem getting up there. Other characters may need to charge a Super Jump while standing on the Tweeter. Either way, hold B as you enter the door. The game will now recognize that you are properly holding the POW Block.
Now run and jump across the gap to the left, hop on top of the ledge and stand on top of the Shy Guy. Throw the POW Block and press B to lift the Shy Guy just before the POW Block smashes into the ground. If you did this trick properly, your character will lift the Shy Guy, but the Shy Guy will fall off screen.
Now here, most speedrunners will do a crazy trick that involves bouncing bombs on your own head while climbing down the ladder to warp through the floor. This trick wasn't showcased in the video, but it's pretty vital for world record speedrun times.
For amateurs like myself, simply bomb open the blocks that seal the way to the door, and enter the door to the back entrance. Now, your character will be holding a Shy Guy as you enter the boss arena!
You may need to charge a Super Jump to gain access to the roof, but once you're on top, if you time a perfect throw, you can throw a Shy Guy from the roof and hit Birdo three times with one toss! Note that the perfect throw often involves hitting yourself with the Shy Guy and taking damage.
