What would you call modern-day indentured servitude? “Training Repayment Programs” You agree to extra training at your company, but what you might not know is it’s locking you there for potentially years on end. For example, PetSmart’s “Grooming Academy” advertises the program as free and paid for but requires trainees to sign a contract. Which states that the employee will work for the company for two years or pay 5,500 dollars for training costs. And companies have adopted tactics like this because, according to one law professor, “They are looking for other ways to keep employees from leaving their jobs that they think are more enforceable.” But should people be expected to tolerate low wages and unhealthy work environments just because they’ve been trapped through training?
