Sonic CD features more open ended level design, with more things to hunt for besides rings. Hidden in each level are two of Eggman's machines to destroy.
One is the Robot Transporter, a machine which creates Badniks to invade Little Planet. In all time periods but the past, the Robot Transporter can be seen rusted and broken down, having served its purpose. However, by going back to the past, you can find the machine active, and can destroy it to change the current level's future from a polluted Bad Future to a utopian Good Future. One cool thing about this is that by doing this in every non-boss level in the game, you can get the Good Ending without needing a single Time Stone. If you get frustrated by the Special Stages, you might want to do this instead!
Completely optional is the Metal Sonic Projector, which is also only found in the past. Destroying this will cause more animals to be found in the current level. Finding and destroying every single one will show you a hidden message after the credits.
