Sonic CD (Sega CD / US) | Playthrough
Sonic CD (Sonic the Hedgehog CD) (US ver.) normal game playthrough. (Sega CD, emulated by Kega Fusion)
Here it is, the winner of last week's poll has finally arrives today, Sonic CD on the Sega CD system!!
A little known facts about the Sega CD, it's an separate add-on system for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive console, which requires another bulky power adapter to plug it in. (I remember how big it was from the Super Nintendo I grew up with since childhood, as I don't have a Sega Genesis back then, but I still get the nostalgic feeling for it though.) Unlike both SNES & Genesis alike, the Sega CD doesn't have much released games for its add-on port as the sales weren't much of a success to compete not only the SNES, but its own relative console, the Sega Genesis. (also due to its highly overprices as I've found out from an certain video I've watched around last year... My goodness...)
Now for the game itself, this game is another Sonic game, exclusively for the Sega CD add-on system, and probably the only Sonic game made for the Sega CD platform too, while the rest were made for Genesis / Mega Drive. (there's another Sonic game made for the other Genesis add-on, the Sega 32X, which also failed as well... I may consider about planning for one someday soon in the future, maybe after an certain Sonic game...) The setting for this game is between "Sonic 2" & "Sonic 3 & Knuckles", since both Tails and Knuckles weren't featured in this game. This game also features as the first appearances for two well-known Sonic series characters; Metal Sonic, an metallic arch-nemesis clone to Sonic, made by Dr. Robotnik himself, (aka Dr. Eggman todays) and Amy Rose, an young pink hedgehog girl whose always adore Sonic.
Your goal to this game, is to play as Sonic as always, to run fast across the floating planet, known as Little Planet, being all chained up and caught under Robotnik's next evil scheme. While running through each stages, you'll may come across an sign post with the word "Past" or "Future" on it. Once you've ran past through them, you can be able to travel through time on each certain stages you're on now, whenever you've chose either Past or Future. There's a catch for using them, you must run fast enough to time travel and must NOT either stopped on purpose or by an incoming obstacles along the way, cause you've did stopped, then you'll lose the chance to travel through time. If you've managed to run fast enough WITHOUT being interrupted, then you'll be seeing an scene of Sonic going through time.
For one thing about the "Future" part; in this game, there are two types of Future across each stages, the "Bad" futuristic theme and "Good" peaceful theme. In order to get the "Good Future" stage theme, you need to travel to the Past instead of the Future, and find two things that were an disturbances like an holographic device with Metal Sonic and an floating big capsule-like device that spawn those robot enemies. Find either of them and bash them out completely, then find an Future post and travel back twice, if you're able to find another one in the Present part before reaching the goal soon. Once you've the future after fulfilling the conditions in the Past, then you'll witness an peaceful Good Future, with fever enemies and maybe less traps along the way. There's one thing I may not understand though, I couldn't tell if having either an Good or Bad future may affect your boss fight with Dr. Robotnik on each stages. If I had to guess myself, having an standard Bad Future will might make Robotnik stronger and harder to beat, while having an Good Future will might make him looks weaker or something like that... (I can't tell the differences, so it's just a wild guess...)
This game also adapted the special stage features from its first Sonic game, by collecting at least 50 rings before reaching the goal point at the end of each stages. Once you do have enough rings with you, find an big floating ring by the goal point and jump into it. This game's special stage is difference than collecting numbers of rings or blue orbs, this time you're in like an 3D based fields with several UFOs hovering all over the place. You just need to run fast enough and get closer to one of those UFO and jump on them to destroy it one by one. Be aware of your surroundings, like the water-filled areas, as those can deplete your time fast. Once you've destroyed all UFOS in the special stage, you'll rewarded with an Time Stone, an special emerald-like item for this game. If I had to guess, there's probably like either six or seven of them, like the Chaos Emeralds in each Sonic games, and you need to have all of them to get the true ending to this game.
