Rival Battle
Modern
Shadow the Hedgehog

It's everyone's favorite (or least favorite) angsty hedgehog on a motorcycle (but not yet), Shadow the Hedgehog! Despite being a main character, he was conspicuously absent from Sonic's birthday party. Turns out that you do see him later after all--just as a rival battle when Sonic's traveled back to the events of Sonic Adventure 2. I suppose this is unrelated to why Shadow's missing though.

The battle against Shadow is set aboard the ARK, or rather, on a series of walkways around the Eclipse Cannon. This is presumably during that showdown as Eggman's about to get the Eclipse Cannon ready (Eggman convinced Shadow to try and stop Sonic, and Sonic's just trying to get Shadow out of his way), and Sonic has to relive it all over again--except this time, things are different. Shadow was designed to be every bit as equal as Sonic, and in between the time he's appeared in a main series games, he has since picked up the Sonic Boost and the Quick Step. Or rather, Shadow's been retconned to already having these moves during Professor Gerald Robotnik's colony drop. He'll also use Rings to keep himself from getting KOed, just as you would using Sonic, so you can't take him out in conventional ways. (That is, you can cause him to lose his Rings by boosting into him--but he can do it to you too.)

Instead, Sonic and Shadow need to race to get two Energy Cores. If Sonic can collect two of them first, then he can power up and get...a modified Sonic Boost that's purple. He can then slam into meteoroids, which home in on Shadow, to slow Shadow down. If Sonic can hit every space rock, then he'll be able to catch up to Shadow and repeatedly boost into him to get rid of all of Shadow's Rings and defeat him. (Omochao's terminology is a bit off. A meteorite is a meteor that's already fallen onto a planet. A meteoroid is one that's still floating around in space.)

If Shadow can get two Energy Cores first, he'll be able to use Chaos Spear (not seen here). Shadow then litters the track with lots of energy javelins, and if Sonic clears them all, he'll go for a direct attack, which Sonic has to quickly get out of the way from.

If either hedgehog's Energy Core move fails to get rid of the other, then another Energy Core will appear and the race continues.

The music here is a remix of "For True Story" from Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic's power-up music is a remix of "Live & Learn" from Sonic Adventure 2. Shadow's power-up music is a remix of "All Hail Shadow" from Shadow the Hedgehog.

Shadow is voiced by Kirk Thornton, who's made his way into pretty much every anime with an English voice cast. You have heard him prior in my videos, playing Jubei in BlazBlue and Lord Fukusaku (also known as Pa Toad) in Naruto.
