Later on, in Crisis City, there will be a follow-up challenge to this stage using Modern Sonic called Switcheroo, which places a greater emphasis on finding the correct sequence of switches to make certain platforms appear and disappear.
This one's more complicated and simpler at the same time: The switches can manipulate those platforms or the rotating square ones that Chemical Plant normally has, but there are fewer of them overall, and odds are you'll have to hit all of the switches to get to the end.
There's one near the end that might trip some people up: There is a switch underneath one of the Spiny enemies on a wall. Of course, if you have Sonic leap up to destroy it (as you should, because it's in an annoying place), you'll have hit the switch anyway.
