Ok so, Sonic. One of the most iconic video game characters. Created by SEGA in 1991, Sonic was made to rival Nintendo’s Mario and he did exactly that for quite a few years. But over time the Sonic games have gotten worse, and worse, and worse. Now with the recent release of Sonic Colours Ultimate, it’s clear that SEGA treat Sonic like a joke and so in this video I wanna talk about Sonic games becoming a joke.

Alright so, as I said earlier SEGA created Sonic to rival Nintendo’s Mario and Sonic did put up a really good fight against Mario, until 3D games came around. One on hand you’ve got Mario’s transition from 2D games to his first 3D game and his first game was incredible, Super Mario 64 is an amazing game and was even more amazing in 1996. Then on the other hand there’s Sonic’s transition from 2D games to his first 3D game and um, it was alright. Sonic Adventure wasn’t anything insane but it wasn’t too bad either.

As time went on, 3D Sonic games continued to release and after the release of Sonic Adventure 2, I think it’s fair to say that 3D Sonic games have been on a downward slope ever since with the exception of one or two decent games. At the time I’m recording this video it’s September of 2021 and the most recent 3D Sonic game is Sonic Colours Ultimate. I was really looking forward to Sonic Colours Ultimate as not only is Sonic Colours my favourite Sonic game But with the state of 3D Sonic, or just Sonic in general, a HD port of one of the better 3D Sonic games would be a good way to get the Sonic series back on its feet. Somehow the developers messed up Sonic Colours Ultimate and it just makes me really mad. First of all, how on earth do you mess up a HD port, all you need to do is make a 10 year old game look a little bit better.

Putting all the technical faults in Sonic Colours Ultimate to the side, Sonic Generations which is a game that released in 2011 looks better than Sonic Colours Ultimate which is a HD port of a game that only released one year before Sonic Generations. After all the dogshit 3D Sonic games that are thrown our way, you get given the chance to redeem yourselves, and you screw up this chance. Personally I hate ports, but I was actually glad that instead of SEGA releasing a brand new Sonic game this year, they were instead just porting Sonic Colours to modern systems. This would be a good way to show people a decent 3D Sonic game and they wouldn’t have to put a lot of effort into the game as it’s just a port, but somehow the developers messed it up.

If you look at the past decade of Sonic games, you cannot tell me that any of them are good, except for Sonic Mania. But here’s the thing, Sonic Mania wasn't even made by the Sonic Team! I don’t understand why SEGA treats their most iconic character like a joke. Also I feel like it’s worth noting that I don’t hate Sonic, I hate how SEGA treat Sonic. I had a good time with Sonic Mania, I enjoyed the Sonic movie and I’ve even got a fuckin Sonic hat. So don’t say in the comments, “oh you just hate Sonic” as I do like Sonic.

Another thing I don’t understand is why SEGA continues to release 3D Sonic games. 2D Sonic games are what Sonic is known for and 2D Sonic games also tend to sell better than 3D Sonic games AND 2D games are also easier to make and then 3D games. Yet SEGA keep pumping out awful 3D Sonic games that completely ruin Sonic’s legacy and they sell terribly. If you are going to bother making 3D Sonic games, put in the effort to make a good 3 Dimensional Sonic game and if you don’t wanna do that, that’s completely fine. Just make 2D Sonic games then, it’s that simple. The success of Sonic Mania shows that people still love 2D Sonic but no, just keep making crappy 3D Sonic games that sell horribly and that people hate.
