Like Mirage Saloon, Lava Reef has a significant difference to itself depending on whether or not you're playing as Knuckles.

Near the end of Act 2, as Knuckles, you get redirected into a different route since Knuckles can't jump high enough to reach the route Sonic and Tails go through. This alternate route for him has an exit that leads to a more direct remake of Sonic 3 & Knuckles' Hidden Palace Zone.

It first starts out with you having to make a climb upward like you did with Sonic & Tails, but then it much earlier leads into the Emerald Shrine. The Master Emerald is a bit bigger than what I remember from S3&K, but another significant thing here is WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SUPER EMERALDS?! They're now cracked and dull grey. Seems like they're more over stone replicas of the Super Emeralds than anything, now.

Besides all of that, Heavy King appears and tries to use his grip claw to steal the Master Emerald. Knuckles manages to remember when Eggman did exactly the same thing in S3&K, right after he revealed himself as a lying villain. Knuckles even remembers getting electrocuted for trying to stop him.

So Knuckles then ignores all of the previous gullibility he had before, and manages to keep the Master Emerald in its perch from Heavy King, leading to a boss battle.

This is the only time you get to fight Heavy King in his normal form. He stands on the Master Emerald to power himself up, just like Mecha Sonic did against Knuckles at the end of S3&K. This lets King float, raze the ground with lasers, and surround himself with energy orbs that he can launch at you.

Hitting King on his way to the Master Emerald makes him stagger for a moment, but he can still take damage even while he's powered up. He's not too hard to beat, especially since I was Super Knuckles in this video, but after beating him, he then uses his grip claw to hightail out of there.

Knuckles makes his way into Little Planet's Metallic Madness by using a teleporter. The same kind of teleporter that he used to get to Sky Sanctuary!
